Since I can remember I have had an active interest in home maintenance and from a young age I was decorating and fixing things around my parents home. At 13 I rewired their house replacing the old round pin sockets (for those that remember them) with the modern flat pins. At that time regulations were not in place so anyone could do electrical work.
As my favourite subjects at school were maths, physics and applied science and technology, I decided to follow a technical career path and at 16 started an electronics apprenticeship at GEC Marconi. I will not go too deep into my career as this is covered by my CV, but I have had a variety of jobs including 18 months in Nigeria installing radio stations. I have travelled the world installing and repairing NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) systems and have been in charge of a team of engineers.
In the early 1980s I decided to buy my own property, needless to say it needed lots of work. One thing it needed was to be rewired, so as to comply with the regulations in force at the time I took a City and Guilds course (C&G 236) in electrical design and installation, 15th edition wiring regulations, so that I could comply as a competent person. I have to date rewired 4 properties but since the regulations have changed and you need NICEIC or equivalent certification I no longer am able to do this. I have taken IEEE (now IET) 16th and 17th edition regulation updates to keep my knowledge up to date. Although I have followed and read up on the 18th edition I have not yet taken course.
I have also taken the City and Guilds 2377-601 exam in In-Service Inspection and Testing (PAT) and City and Guilds 2377-201 Management Requirements for the Maintenance of Electrical Equipment.
I have renovated most of the homes I have lived in and in 3 of them have installed complete central heating systems up to the point of connecting the gas to the boiler (was originally Corgi now GasSafe engineers). I have in an industrial environment installed various gas fittings but regulations are different in these cases.
I have performed all the regular maintenance tasks including painting and decorating both interior and exterior, tiling both walls and floors, laying laminate flooring, installing new kitchens and bathrooms, fixing damp issues including DPC injection and anything else that needed doing.
In the garden I have installed patios, garden ponds, greenhouses, fences, gates and general hard landscaping and planting.
In my spare time I follow Rugby Union supporting Leicester Tigers, and England Rugby.
I am continuously updating my first aid and health and safety qualifications.
